3D Animation - contemporary direction of animation based on three-dimensional objects and scenes. Since most of the tasks for creating such animations are performed using computer technologies, it is also called "computer animation".

The turning point was the second half of the 80-ties, when the first computer animation studios began to appear. Today, the possibilities of computer technologies allow you to create an image that is not inferior to the realism of a movie.

The work starts with an idea, which scriptwriters convert to a story. Then, they create a graphical representation of key scenes - storyboard.

The process involves concept artists who create the outline shape of the characters - sketches. They begin to select the appropriate image or combine several into one. When the team decides that the best option is created, 3D-modelers and 3D-animators undertake the process. 3D-modelers recreate the character's appearance. They turn flat sketch in a three-D object. 3D-animators are responsible for the character's behavior in three dimensions: body movements, facial muscles, items of clothing or fur cover. Together they turn a drawing into a living creature. It is a very laborious and lengthy process.

When the work on the characters is over, scene workup begins. Characters are placed in a specially created environment and special effects are added.

The final stage - rendering. This process can be compared with the shooting on a camera, but all the actions of the characters and objects are calculated by the program. This requires a powerful computer and a huge amount of time. That’s how three-dimensional world becomes a cartoon.
