On this sunny summer morning, the filming crew gathered near the Institute of Biology, not far from the “Expocenter of Ukraine” complex (VDNH).
Here, on the stairs of the building, filming has just started for the four-episode melodrama series “Better Than Anyone”, a joint project of FILM.UA and Channel “Ukraine”.
...The first scenes came out very emotional! According to the plot, the protagonist, a microbiologist Serhiy, has a manly conversation with his daughter’s admirer. The two men start and argument that soon grows into a brief fight.
"Better Than Anyone" is a melodramatic story about family values. Here is what the series’ director Maxim Bernadsky, whom the audience remembers by his “Baby Boxes” series, has to say about his new project:
“This film is about the way relationships can grow difficult between people. It's not easy to find the right kind of person and to believe in love. However, we have wonderful actors who will be able to reveal their complex characters.”
Traditionally, immediately after working on the first few scenes, the crew broke a plate on the set as a symbol of the start of filming.
The lead actress, Aleksandra Epstein did not have any scenes shoot on the first day, but she still arrived to the set. Together with the rest of the team, Alexandra was present at this plate-breaking ceremony, and then revealed some bits about her character.
“My character, Masha, is an honest and sincere girl, she is straightforward and doesn’t consider it necessary to use intrigue to get out of difficult situations. In the depths of her heart, she still remains a child, and this may be the reason why her students are so drawn to her at school. Yes, she is optimistic, but at the same time she often acts emotionally - and this attracts me in this character.”
The actor Dmitry Pchela has a major, complex role. At first, viewers will see a young talented man, but then he will reveal himself as the father of an grown-up daughter.
“There are many facets to Serhiy's character, and that's what drew me to him. At the beginning of the story, we see a man who seems to have it all — a beloved wife, a good job and a bright future. But by the middle of the story, he loses everything due to some catastrophic events in his life. I'm curious to show how he finds his way out of such situations, how he finds support, and ultimately, love” – Dmitry said.
The audience will find unexpected plot twists and some characters will turn out to be quite different from what they might first seem... Filming will take place in Kyiv and will continue until the beginning of July. Follow our updates: as we write about what’s happening on the set.
