Tonight at 7 PM, on air of STB channel, the long-awaited premiere of Step Dan, a 16-episode dramedy produced by FILM.UA, will take place. A 24-year-old barman Dan and a 39-year-old business lady Tina meet in nonstandard circumstances with the standard turn of events: a date, a one-night stand, no strings attached… Both are totally fine with it until Dan suddenly realizes he’s fallen head over heels in love. But will Dan be able to become a stepfather for Tina’s three children? What to do with their grandma who has immediately taken against the “greenhorn”? How will Tina’s close friends react to such an obvious misalliance?
“For me it is a story about being yourself and not trying to fit the proposed limits even in our conservative society. I talked to many people and heard lots of stories about such relationships between a more mature woman and a younger guy. I remember one actress coming to the auditions and telling us she read the script and couldn’t believe her own eyes: the situation totally mirrored the one from her own life,” says Kristina Sivolap, film director.
“This is an original, sincere and carefree story about love and treating your age with irony. It is a look on certain aspects of a relationship between our characters who have a considerable age difference,” says Irina Gromozda, project director. “I like how the adaptation has turned out, the guys hit the bull’s eye. It is really hard to adapt a foreign project, keep the basic storyline and at the same time make it close, understandable and funny for us.”
Step Dan dramedy is based on Step Dave, a successful New Zealand format by South Pacific Pictures, a part of all3media group. “When we started adapting the script, we decided that first of all we have to preserve all good things in this story. And it just looked like we have nothing to remake. That’s why we tried to keep the characters as close to the original as possible – their traits, motivations, etc. but put them in a recognizable environment,” says Olesya Lukyanenko, series creative producer. “This is not a classic comedy, there are no jokes for the sake of jokes here. Mostly it is about characters reacting to a situation they have found themselves in, both in a funny and a dramatic way.”
