On June 11, the application period for international participants ended. Over two thousand applications were received, and it is a new record for the festival. This year, the leading countries are the USA, the UK, and Germany.

This year, those willing to demonstrate Ukrainian projects turned out to be so numerous that national competition will be showcased in a separate block, and the application deadline for Ukrainian participants has been extended until July 1.

The total prize fund amounts to 5,000 USD to be divided between Ukrainian and international competition. All those whose works are 30 minutes or under (including end credits) with no less than 30 per cent made in animation technique are eligible to apply.

The announced festival theme for this year is HEROES AND VILLAINS. We are surrounded by the world we do not know, the world of duality, oppositions and contrasts. The world where we sometimes cannot distinguish lies from the truth, where we ignore failures and exaggerate victories. We forget that the world isn’t black-and-white, it is deeper and has lots of aspects. There is a hero and a villain in every one of us, and it is up to us to decide who we become in the end.

LINOLEUM organizers also promise a packed program dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Ukrainian animation, including retrospectives and meetings with authors.

This week, LINOLEUM will become a part of the Ukrainian stand, the first one in the history of the main global animation festival in Annecy. Anastasia Verlinska, LINOLEUM program director, has joined Ukrainian delegation which will present Ukrainian animation on June 13-16 at MIFA, the biggest global market of animation content in the framework of International Animation Festival in Annecy. For LINOLEUM, this trip will be a good chance to find potential partners and establish international cooperation with European counterparts. Anastasia will be accompanied by the winner of the festival in 2016, Tatyana Kabayeva who got a special jury prize in the national competition for her Big Man project – a trip to Annecy festival.

“I am thankful to LINOLEUM festival for an opportunity to get immersed in the animation kaleidoscope from all over the world. I am now preparing for a new work in animation, so this event is really valuable for me due to the diversity of authors, stories and animated narrative techniques; I am sure they will inspire me for creative work. I hope everyone has a great festival,” says the winner.

LINOLEUM, festival of topical animation and media arts, will take place in Kyiv on September 28 – October 1 in Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Center.
