February 26 Yaroslav Pilunsky held a workshop on the work of cinematographer. Jaroslav talked about his work on such projects as "Wii", "OrAngeLove", "Brothers. Last Confession", "Babel-13" and the filming of television clips and commercials.
We share with you some of the theses of the workshop:
The main task of the cinematographer is using light to immerse the viewer in the atmosphere of the film. Light is a defining moment in the creation of the volume and pattern. Light drawing is naturally perceived by viewers when it detects natural geometric forms and proportions, emphasizing them.
It is also extremely important to keep the brightness range. Otherwise, the viewer when watching will feel uncomfortable.
Cinematographer's equation: booster-light + main light + correct brightness range + well-chosen accent + right movement + composition + optics.
It is also important to study the classics of fine art since the Renaissance. See the paintings in the original, not reproduction. Go to the Louvre, for example.
Stereo still has a lot of limitations. When working with 3-D it was found that stereo is not enough to give a volume image. Each piece needs to be emphasized by the light. Volume dissappears when there's a flat light, you need to "stress" it all the time, no matter whether you are shooting on film, digital, or stereo.
Set of optics is extremely important in the cinematographer's work. The choice of camera and lens can be decisive for the picture.
The possibilities of the film, its dynamic color range still can't compete with digital. In particular, when shooting on film, the texture of a human face is transmitted accurately. Each particle of the film collects all shades. And even black or white remain colors. The material of the film also gives you more options for color correction. According to Yaroslav, we will return to the film, only with new technologies. Just as we got back to the vinyl after MP3.
In India, the film market is huge. They shoot many films and don't use digital cameras. This is justified by the structure of the cinema market in India.
Smoke helps to add volume in space.
When you shoot in 3D, you must still pay more attention to the choice of lens.
Furthermore, in 3D it is very important that the actor kept moving all the time - this gives a sense of presence.
Google SketchUp - a program for architects, but it is convenient to use and to work on the film. You can draw a model of the pavilion, place the color scheme, plan alignment throughout the set, thus observe all the exact sizes, as well as take into account the angle of the camera and instruments, lens characteristics.
