Rimma and Alla Piranova, a mother and a daughter, live a settled and secluded life of wealthy lonely women. Rimma, a well-known author, writes chick-lit. Alla manages her own lyceum. Their usual world comes crashing down when Rimma finds a letter in the study of her late son Nikolay. In that letter, a certain Raya from Kulichovsk tearfully begs Nikolay to take care of their daughter Nadezhda who she had from him twenty years ago; the daughter’s name also means «hope» in Russian. Rimma is convinced that the letter is a sign Nikolay has sent them from the other world; Alla is rather skeptical. However, one early morning Rimma sets out for Kulichovsk to look for Nadezhda…
