Recently, actor Dmitry Pchela has been starring in FILM.UA’s projects. Melodramas “Trust Me” and “Better Than Anyone” are the studio’s latest series to feature the actor.

When off the set, Dmitry is a charming and interesting person. He tells about his latest work – a role in “Better Than Anyone”, and shares some personal stories about his wife Katerina Ryabova and little daughter Sonia...

  • Dmitry, what attracted you the most in Sergei from the Better Than Anyone melodrama series?

When I was reading the script, I was especially touched by the scene where the character bids farewell to his first wife. And then i realized that I wanted to play this character. I also wanted to portray a man who inches his way out of a difficult life situation and rebuilds his life from scratch.

  • He finds new love...

Oh, and love too! My character Sergei fights for his wife till the very end, even though he understands that he hasn’t always been the best husband for her...

  • Is it true that it’s easier t play antagonist characters?

Yes, because they tend to have a richer and more versatile palette, they are more dynamic and authentic. These characters usually have a very specific goal – to break or destroy something, or to exact revenge. In contrast, protagonists’ goals seem to be blurry. Personally, I like to justify my bad guys’ actions – in fact, I love doing it!

  • But you only seem to play good guys!

I wouldn’t say so: all of the previous year I only played antagonists. I even thought that I would start declining if I were to get another antagonist role, as I really wanted to play a good guy. But this year, I mostly play positive male characters.

  • In “Trust Me”, you played a role together with your wife Katya Ryabova. Please tell us what it’s like to work on the same set with a close person.

Honestly, I would have never thought that it would be so difficult. We’ve been together for many years, we are raising our daughter Sofia, and we had to work really hard to play the scene where we had just met each other. It's just that your body can’t lie - it gives you away when you’re close to a loved one. So personally  for me, it wasn’t easy...

  • Rumor has it that you had a very romantic first meeting with Katya...

Yes, that's true (smiles). I watched a video of a play when suddenly I saw Katya playing one of the roles. Right away, I asked: “Who is this girl?” Then I found her, and we began to date. Then immediately I felt that she is the one...

  • I’ve read that your little daughter also got a chance to play in the movies. Is it true?

Sonia starred in her first role when she was only two months old. In one of the projects, she played my son Sasha. My wife Katya had to ride in the car in terrible frost. But it seems to me that all this was no coincidence: you could say our Sonia has already started her career in the cinema. She will turn 4 years old on September 30th. And I wouldn't mind if she follows in our footsteps. I even think she has little choice with her parents being actors.

  • Dmitry, it appears that your second degree is in direction...

Yes, I've had my fair share of education, and not only in the field of theater, but in film direction as well. Which stories interest me? You know, there are three themes - love, death and the meaning of life. Usually, deep dramatic stories have all three of these components.

  • Does your direction background help or make it more difficult to act?

Both. It complicates things because I may have differing views or misunderstandings with the director. But at the same time, it helps a great deal because I get to see the scene from a director’s viewpoint.
